Day One Saturday 14th April 2018

Day One Saturday 14th April 2018Day One Saturday 14th April 2018

Day 1

After almost three months of summer with little to no rain the season changes with a forecast of 30 knots and rain greeting the 21 entrants, a terrific response with nine interstate competitors. The fleet was high quality with a good sample of past top 5 National competitors.

Number 3 rigs were the order with no one changing from their initial assessment. No significant trouble with gear however Norman Wallis had to retire with hull “fatigue”, his boat not himself.

Scott Mitchell sailed consistently and held a good lead with Ross Bennett and Sean Wallis holding the minor placings.

Day Two Sunday 15th April

Day 2

Calmer conditions with the fleet selecting their Number 2 rigs; most held on to their original selection with a few chancing the lighted breeze as the afternoon progressed. These competitors were rewarded with Johno Johnson almost taking out a podium finish in one race toward the end of the day only to fail at the last mark rounding.

Some individual performance with “personal bests” being broken were noted; Ben Morris taking out a first place.

Scott Mitchell ended the event if a comfortable position with “guess who” in second place and Sean Wallis third.

Thanks to the Interstate competitors for making the trip and making the fleet very competitive.

Thanks also to David Lane for officiating and the usual helpers with rescue boat and results keeping duties

Whitrod Classic

A good fleet of 14 yachts had excellent sailing conditions with SSW winds all day.  Wind strength varied from about 12 knots to 15 knots with some stronger gusts.  Most yachts started on 'A' rigs and changed to 'B' with just a couple hanging on all day to the larger rig.  The breeze did fade at for the last two or three races.

Scott Mitchell dominated the day but was being pushed by Brett Osborn and Paul Littledyke (before he had winch issues).  Most yachts showed speed at times but it comes down to consistency.

The event ran smoothly thanks to Len and a couple of helpers and again showed The Pat as an excellent venue in the SW winds with the course close to the skippers sailing from an elevated position.

Skippers from two Clubs made up the fleet. It is good to see participation at ranking events as sailing against others is telling and can only help to normalise skills.

A warm sunny day greeted a small but keen fleet of skippers for the first SA RM Ranking event of 2018. The forecast was for a building southerly which suited the Pat course pretty well. Skippers were undecided on A or B rigs first up with most choosing B to best suit the early gusting breeze. Some changes were made after race 1 with most happy on B rigs.

Scott had a great start to the day with Paul close on his heels and Ben keeping them honest pinching a couple of wins. As Paul improved the Indie’s performance as the day went on the overall results of the day narrowed to be neck and neck as racing progressed. Late in the day, the regatta lead was changing rapidly after each race and the battle for third (Tim A and Ben M) was also very tight

Towards the end there were only 4 of the original 9 starters left with fatigue setting in and some boats having minor failures. This made it harder for those needing to get a break over a competitor. In the end it was Paul (23 points) narrowly winning from Scott (26 points), both sailing home built Brad Gibson designed Indie, then a gap back to Tim Arland (47 points) and Ben Morris (50 points) both sailing Red Ant F3’s.

It was good to see some new faces with John from Paris Creek at his first RM event and Alan Bessell arriving late but showing some glimpses of the speed of the Starkers when the breeze was solid.

RM Interclub Challenge 1 - Stirling

What a great day weather wise, sunshine all day and low 20s in the afternoon.  The lake looked at its best and all enjoyed the day.  While there has to complaints about the winds - this is Woorabinda! - at least we had enough breeze to complete 8 well fought races.  Maybe it was the home ground (water?) advantage but Stirling won the day convincingly with Wayne Terry and Mal heading the leader board.  Tony was the best of the SARYC.  Ben would like to thank all who sailed for an enjoyable day.

10R State Title

The skippers, race officials, and spectators enjoyed a pleasant spring day for the SA 2018 10R State Title at Tiranna Way. Brilliant sunshine and a moderate NW breeze persisted all day.

You may remember that this event was brought forward to coincide with the Bournville Trophy event for RM skippers, to entice more interstate skippers to come to Adelaide for a full weekend of sailing.  It worked: there were 4 interstate yachts and 9 local yachts on the line at the start of the first heat.

Throughout the day there were minor changes in wind strength and direction. Most skippers kept using their A rigs, although a few changed down to B rigs for some afternoon heats. Two early withdrawals and minor damage to other yachts from time to time meant there were between 9 and 11 starters in most heats.

The positioning of windward marks had to be fine-tuned on a couple of occasions, but we still managed to run 18 heats before the 3 pm deadline (and welcome relief from staring into the sun’s reflection).

The final three placegetters shared the honours as heat winners at various times, but when the points were totalled it was Andrew Reid who was victorious. Congratulations Andrew. Scott Mitchell and Kirwan Robb took out the minor placings.

Many thanks to the interstate skippers who supported this event. It was great for the local skippers and spectators to witness some world class competitors in action at West Lakes.

Thanks also go to Alan Bessell (PRO), Trevor Jeffree (Scorer), John Inverarity (Line Judge), and Brian Walsh and Jeff Watson (boat crew), who were all kept reasonably busy throughout the day.
