IOM State Championship

Wild and windy would describe the two days of the SA IOM championships to say nothing of the rain!!  Saturday began with 10knots and a Northerly swinging west and increasing.  A rigs gave way to B rigs after lunch as the winds picked up to 12-15 knots with stronger gusts and rain squalls.  The water level was very low on Sat in the Pat as major work is being undertaken so the course was shifted south to a deeper section.  Interestingly it rose rather quickly in the afternoon as the gates opened to allow the high tide to flow in causing some difficult buoy roundings

Sunday saw the water level high but it didn't last as the tide dropped and shallow spots caused problems.  There was a very strong southerly blowing with gusts well into the mid 20 knot range causing some mayhem.  Some of this is captured in the image above and the rest on the the picasa site.  Click HERE to view.

Conditions moderated a little in the afternoon.  Well done to Rob and his team for running the event in very difficult circumstances.

Whitrod Classic

The event was held in a tricky 5-10 knots SE-SSE wind making the course difficult to set.  'A' rigs were carried all day.  Paul was very consistent as usual while Scott must have been rapped with his new yacht.

KM IOM Challenge

Congratulations Scott.  It seems the count-back was in your favour!

What a great day for sailing with 12-15 knots early and 'B' rigs all round followed by a slight easing to allow "A' rigs from midday onwards.  The wind stayed from the south all day and was consistent with just enough swing to play the shifts.

RM State Championship

Light to moderate SW winds gave ideal conditions for the 2011 RM State championship.  David Thomas was consistently the best on the day with Ben maintaining touch near the front of the fleet.  Scott improved during the day and had some excellent results in the lighter winds.   The quality of competition was excellent showing how well the Marblehead competition is improving in SA

Bournville Cup

The day started with a promise of good Northerlies swinging to the West and South later and building.  Other than the bit of a show during lunch time and for a couple of races after, the winds gradually lightened over the day and settled to a gentle NW.  Racing was close with many yachts sharing the lead.  David Knights showed excellent boat speed at times and read the wind shifts well, Scott M continued to impress in the light while David T and Ron P were always in the mix.  Despite Ben finishing the day better, the accolades are all for John Amber who showed what an excellent boat and consistently good sailing skills can do.  Well done John!  The event was again well run by ARCYRC and Johnno and his team are to be congratulated for a smooth enjoyable event.

Perhaps the most pleasing thing about the two days was the excellent size of the fleet.  With a promise of more Vics next year and more skippers in SA getting Marbleheads, 2012 looks like a growth period for the class and an lift in the level of competition - great for SA and Marbleheads.

RM Interclub Challenge 1 - Patawalonga

Conditions were generally in the range of 8 to 15 knots Northerly giving perfect conditions for a long course parallel to the shore. Initial races were standard 2 laps start near the bottom mark and finish at the top with approx 160 metres between lee and windward marks. After lunch the finish was shifted to the start line and lee mark moved about 40 m further south giving a 200m lee to windward mark. Race times were around 10 to 12 minutes.

15 boats started and finished the first race but by the end only 5 boats were left.  See more pics at https://picasaweb.google.com/SARadioYA

Unfortunately many boats were not able to handle the moderate winds and most were over canvassed as boats were often unable to tack and there was often nosediving. Unfortunately for Jeff Watson one nose dive resulted in the boat continuing all the way to the bottom. Johno and Jeff took little time to recover the boat with the aid of the dinghy.

Thanks to the team at the Pat for running the event so efficiently and for keeping a tight control over the event.

The two jives (Ben 85 and Alan 73) handled the conditions as well as most

Congrats to the Stirling team.  The final results were,

RM Interclub Challenge 2 - Stirling

Stirling -Woorabinda - was at it's best on Sunday, mild, occasionally sunny with a SE wind which is the optimum direction for the lake.  The wind was still Stirling tho with holes, strong gusts  and direction changes that required constant concentration.  Local knowledge helped and saw the Stirling team off to a great start but the automatic handicap system soon put the pressure on them.  Bob Watson and Ian Dowsett both handled the conditions well and finished creditably.  All appeared to enjoy the day with very few disputes.

Stirling took the day with SARYC second and SEHMYC third.  A special  mention to Bob who was the only entrant from ARCYRC and kindly agreed to sail for SEHMYC to boost their team.

A very special thanks to Rob Marshall who kept us all honest through the day and made the most tidy and well-presented results board I have ever seen!!  He had some help from Ian Smallacombe early and a friend from Gumeracha later.

Thanks to all competitors for making the event friendly and enjoyable

RM Interclub Challenge 3 Paris Creek

Congratulations to the SEHMYC for the event on Saturday.  We had plenty of wind, plenty of yachts, plenty of sun, plenty of food and plenty of good sailing.  A most enjoyable day.  Stirling are now definitely the team for 2011 taking out the event convincingly, but it was good to see strong competition from SARYC and especially to see an effective team from SEHMYC.  The wind was variable between 0 and 15 knots from the North er West er South East er wherever but tended to stay constant for a while so some good rides were had up and down wind.  While Phillip had trouble with his new yacht he was very competitive, David K, Ian D and Alan G were always in the mix.  The handicap system similar to the one used at Stirling worked a treat and gave the faster boats something to aim for while allowing the slower ones to have a taste of the front running.  Eleven of the 14 yachts had a win at some time in the event.  It would be good to have another excellent turn up at the last of the 4 Interclub challenges at West Lakes on Nov 27.

RM Interclub Challenge 4 West Lakes

The last of the Transom Trophy races was held at West Lakes in near perfect conditions (except for the brief lull in the winds after lunch).  It was great to see two very competitive RM yachts from the Pat as well as two full teams from West lakes and Stirling.  The handicap system worked a treat  and it was hard to keep at the front of the fleet so the winning was shared around resulting in a very tight struggle between Stirling and West Lakes; Stirling just winning the day.  This made it 4 in a row for Stirling and they were justly excited and proud to accept the trophy for 2011.  The individual honours went to Ian D, Phillip L and Bill N

Gunwale Interclub Race 1 all boats handicap report

While the number of yachts was down compared to previous years, the competition was very close.  4 Marbleheads and a similar number of one metres sailed in light to moderate SW winds.  The Marbleheads were particularly closely matched and would often reach the windward mark within a few boat lengths of each other.  As usual the one metres were most competitive in the lighter patches.  The breeze came in a little more after lunch.  All yachts had a great time sailing.  Thanks to ARCYRC for putting on this event.  Thanks to the clubs who made the effort to enter this event, meet with members of other clubs and improve their sailing skills.

10R State Title

The 2011 event was run in near perfect conditions with light winds in the morning and a beautiful sea breeze in the afternoon.  Ben's Iota revelled in the light conditions while Jeff's McDowell showed its speed in the stronger winds.  Greg also showed good speed at times and was always in the mix.  It was a pity steering issues finished his efforts early.
Trevor ran the event efficiently and gives his thanks to Brian P and Jeff W for their help during the day.
