2010 IOM State Championship

Congratulations to Dallas, Brett and Scott.  The 2010 IOM state championships was a hotly contested event and shows the depth of talent in this class both in SA and Australia.  It was very pleasing to see sailors from other states and NZ as well!

Conditions on day 2 were much more variable with the wind hovering about 10-12 knots all day but with large wind shifts.  Skippers stayed with 'A' rigs all day.  With the wind shifts it was hard to be consistent and even the top skipper had trouble at times giving an opportunity for the slower boats to make significant gains if they were prepared to take risks.  In the end skill won out as it mostly does and the results reflect this.  Dallas and Brett were soooo close and I guess there are a lot of 'if only' to be told.  Scott held well onto third place but the next 6 places indicate clearly how competitive that top bunch was.

Another memorable event run smoothly by ARCYRC.  These and other images can be viewed by clicking hereContact Brett Osborne if you want a high resolution image even if your yacht is not displayed as there is only a sample here

Day 1 results

Day 1 was an almost perfect sailing day with the winds steady from the SSW gradually rising from 6/8 knots in the morning to about 12/15 knots in the afternoon.  Skippers elected 'A' rigs initially and changing to 'B' after lunch

2010 IOM Interclub Challenge 2 - Patawalonga

Again this event was dominated by ARCYRC tho Ben has shown some improvement.  The conditions were ideal for a gentle day's sailing with the wind fairly steady at 5-8 knots with quite a few swings.  It was important to pick up the wind swings early to get a break on the other competitors.  The racing was close and sailed in a friendly spirit

2010 RM State Championship

Sunday was a great sailing day.  Winds steadily increased from 6kts in the morning to 15kts in the afternoon switching from SSE to SSW.  The rain did not eventuate instead the sun come out and maintained a quite comfortable 20 degrees.  Ben again started well and sailed consistency throughout the day.  Ron and Jeff were never far behind.  Another well organised and run event so congratulations to the team from 'The Pat'.  It was pleasing to see the fleet at this size as Marblehead's seem to be going through a resurgence currently and the standard of sailing is steadily rising.  View more photos in Picasa by clicking here  Thanks to Rob G, Brett O and Graham I for supplying photos.

2010 Bournville Cup

Despite drizzling rain and the somewhat inconsistent wind generally from the SSE and varying from 5 to 10 k, a great day was had by all competitors.  The event was run efficiently by the Adelaide club and special thanks to Johno, Graham, Brian and Kevin for keeping the event running well.  The racing was hotly contested and the result in doubt right up to the last race and really that could have gone either way.  It was pleasing to see the depth of skill level in the Marblehead's now.  Most yachts did well at times and showed good boat speed.  The weed was a minor concern and each yacht had a tale to tell.  Photos from event may be viewed by clicking here Thanks to Graham I for taking these.

2010 RM Interclub Challenge 1 - Patawalonga

It was pleasing to see the 15 Marbleheads from three of our clubs on the water today.  The conditions were initially good with a consistent NE wind of 12 or so knots.  It gradually faded and eventually swung to the ESE at about 5 knots but quite variable.  Brian again showed consistent speed while Ben initiated the big clanger in race 7 by rounding the windward mark the wrong way.  Why did everyone follow?????  Brian, Jeff W and Jurgen had secret smiles after the race!

Thanks must go to the Adelaide members for making this an interesting and enjoyable day.  Trevor J also helped out with the results etc as Johno had to leave during the day.

2010 RM Interclub Challenge 3 Stirling

Well it turned out a glorious day despite the forecast - no rain and wind all day somewhat variable from 0 to 15 kts and anywhere from NE to SE thro N, NW, W, SW, S typical Stirling but what fun dealing with the gusts!  While only two teams were represented it was great to see the 7 SARYC members there and 5 from SMYRC.  The handicapping worked extremely well with time and again a great cluster of boats converging at the last mark for the dash to the finish.  The scores tell it all with little variation between the final totals.  Perhaps there was some home ground advantage but SMYRC emerged clear winners this time.  This means the next series at West Lakes will be an exciting decider and an event to look forward to.  The current score is SMYRC 1, SAYRC 1.  A special thanks to Rod Marshall who kept the scores and updated the board to keep interest in the results.  Everyone seemed to have an enjoyable time and disputes were at a minimum.

2010 RM Interclub Challenge 4 West Lakes

This was the last of the RM challenges this year.  the sailors from Stirling suffered in the stronger winds as lack of practice and suitable rigs for the conditions made their task difficult.  The winds were in the 15 to 20 knot range with gusts well into the 20+ knots.  Nevertheless, the SARYC certainly performed well in the conditions while Ben did well from Stirling considering starting from scratch most of the day.  Jeff W was the best yacht on the day as his RM is well suited to the off the wind conditions the course favoured with just the 3 short beats to windward.

The event is strongly contested now and perhaps it is time to consider the way in which the event is run and the nature of the handicapping that is used.  Stirling has indicated a preference for their system and this can be considered at the next State meeting ready for 2011.

Well done SARYC!  It is promising though that the numbers and strength of the RM fleet in SA is now as strong as it has been for some years and the sailing ion Sunday showed this.  If we could have attracted the RM's from the Pat then it would have been a true spectacle as they also have some strong RM sailors.

2010 Whitrod Classic

The Whitrod classic started in 10-12 knots of wind from the NNE.  As the day progressed it swung gradually to the west and lightened to about 2-3 knots at the end.  'A' rigs were carried all day tho it would have been interesting to see a 'B' rig during the few races with the stronger gusts.  Paul L showed great skill in both the strong and light breezes while Brett O and John G were also very competitive.  The event was well conducted by the Adelaide club with special thanks to Greg for running the event.

Congratulations to the winners

2010 KM IOM Challenge

The KM Challenge was sailed in excellent winds 10-15 kts from the SW requiring 'A' rigs and progressing to 'B' rigs after lunch - except for Jurgen who changed before lunch and had a blinder in race 6.  Paul and Brett made the best of the conditions tho Simon was consistent most of the day and very competitive in the stronger winds in the afternoon.  Congratulations to Paul and the other place getters and thanks to Greg and others who helped run the event.

2010 10R State Title

In a gusting and constantly swinging northerly wind of about 8 to 12 knots, a small but enthusiastic group of skippers competed for the 2010 SA 10R State Titles. Three designers were represented with Jeff and Brian sailing Lincoln McDowall boats, Bill and John sailing Frank Russell Phoenix designs and Ian's lone dual rated Marblehead designed by Brad Gibson. It soon become apparent that the McDowall boats were the ones to beat with Jeff and Brian having a close battle all day. They were separated by only 3 points after 17 races, with Jeff being the victor. Ian was ever ready to pounce if the other two faltered and picked up a couple of wins before finishing third. Bill and John tried hard and should be thanked for making the effort after finishing forth and fifth respectively. PRO Jurgen Luther had an easy day and thanked the competitors for their fair minded conduct and sportsmanship on the water. Perhaps the greatest challenge to the PRO was to set a fair start line with the wind constantly swinging. It was the area that caused the most conflict among competitors, with all eager to make the best start possible.
